Foods That Can Help Reduce Sweating

By Sam Nardi 2019 Mar 27th

Have you ever wondered if eating certain foods could help you sweat less? It’s a question you may have asked yourself while searching for a solution to your excessive sweating. Earlier this month we looked at the thermic effect of food, and how consuming certain foods can cause you to sweat more. As National Nutrition Month is coming to a close, we wanted to look at the role nutrition plays in decreasing sweating!

There's no clinical evidence suggesting that diet has direct effect on primary hyperhidrosis

There is currently no clinical research that suggests that diet has a direct effect on primary hyperhidrosis. However, consuming certain nutrients and staying hydrated can have positive effects on the body and overall health. Some suggest certain nutrients and vitamins could help you sweat less by regulating your body’s internal temperature and helping with digestion.

Here are  some key foods, vitamins, and drinks that can help you reduce sweating:

Fiber

Everyone knows fiber aids in proper digestion! By consuming fiber-rich foods, you ease your body’s digestive process. Lookout for whole grains rather than processed grains (like white bread). Processed foods make your body work harder to break them down, which can lead to an increase in body temperature and sweating. So, sticking to whole grains is the better option for those who suffer from excessive sweating

Magnesium

Excessive sweating can cause a magnesium deficiency, which can lead to a range of serious health problems. This can make you sweat even more, so be sure you’re getting your required daily intake to avoid that as well as other complications! Great sources of magnesium are almonds, raw cocoa, and legumes.

B Vitamins

B vitamins are vital in the maintenance and regulation of the nervous system. Low levels of B vitamins can cause the body to be oversensitive to stressful situations, which can lead to an increase in sweating. Since stress sweating is an overreaction of the sympathetic nervous system, it is important that proper nutritional support is provided to this system. This can be done by increasing your intake of foods rich in B vitamins, which may help reduce sweating as a response to stress. Some foods rich in B vitamins include meat (beef), fish (salmon), leafy greens, and eggs.

Tea

If stressful situations such as presentations or job interviews trigger a sweating response, then a natural relaxant like green tea can help! Unlike coffee, which is a stimulant that kicks your nervous system into high gear and can trigger excessive levels of sweating, tea can help you stay cool, calm, and collected before stressful events! Additionally, calming teas can also help with sleep, anxiety, and digestion. Green tea and chamomile are great options, just be sure to stick to decaffeinated selections!

Water-Rich Fruits & Veggies

You’ve been told your whole life that fruits and vegetables are good for you...and we’re going to tell you again! Fruits and vegetables are full of essential vitamins and nutrients and generally consist of upwards of 80% water. Consuming the recommended amount of servings per day is a great and easy way to get your daily requirements of vitamins and minerals, without having to spend money on supplements! Additionally, they keep you hydrated and cool. Pro tip: freeze grapes and watermelon for a refreshing snack that can help you cool down!

And of course... water!

While it may seem counterproductive to drink more water when your body just won’t stop producing sweat, it’s important to stay well hydrated! Drinking water can help you cool down in hot temperatures and regulate your body’s internal temperature. If you sweat more than average, you may also become dehydrated more quickly, which is why it’s crucial to keep a bottle of water handy at all times.

Following a healthy and balanced diet can have an overall positive effect on your health. Ensuring that you get all your required vitamins and minerals daily, particularly those listed above, can help regulate digestion and body temperature, keep you hydrated, and keep you calm! Be sure to consult with your doctor or dietician before making any major changes to your diet.

If it seems like you’re always sweating, no matter what you do, and tips & tricks just aren’t working for you, then you may want to consider treating the problem. While no cure exists for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), highly effective treatment is available. Learn more about how you can get your life back with Dermadry’s iontophoresis device here.
