The Sweaty Person’s Summer Survival Guide

By Sam Nardi 2019 Jun 21st
Dermadry Team

Happy summer solstice! Summer is officially upon us, and for us sweaty folks, it’s not the most wonderful time of the year, but rather the most dreaded. To help you stay cool and confident all summer long, we’ve put together the sweaty person’s guide to beating the summer heat.

Living with hyperhidrosis in the summer time.

Wear a Hat

  • Get your head in the game—literally. If you suffer from excessive face and head sweating, also known as craniofacial sweating, wearing a loose, floppy hat or breathable mesh cap can help shield you from the sun’s harmful rays, and keep you cool by keeping your head and face in the shade.

Take AC Breaks

  • If you’re away from your air-conditioned home, and out and about in the blazing midday sun, then be sure to take breaks from the sun when possible. A good way to cool down is to step into an air-conditioned establishment for a few minutes to cool down and stop your body from overheating and producing more sweat. If there are no AC-equipped establishments near you, try to find some shade and relax and cool down for a little bit before getting on with the rest of your day.

Stay Hydrated

  • You probably hear this multiple times a day, but we’ll say it again: drink lots of water! Water is best at keeping you hydrated, but you can also consider drinking a sports beverage to replace the electrolytes you’ve lost while sweating. And hey, if all else fails, you can just pour the contents of your water bottle on yourself and no then one will know the difference between that and your sweat!

Wear Light Clothing

  • We know that dark bulky and patterned clothing can help hide sweat stains, but it can also cause you to sweat more. Tight clothing can make you particularly uncomfortable and restrict airflow, which is not ideal during the summer. Dark colors also attract the sun’s rays and cause you to heat up and produce more sweat. Replace these types of clothing with flowy, light-colored clothing that will help shield you from the sun and let air circulate freely around your body.

Use Deodorants and Perfumes

  • Deodorants and perfumes will not stop sweat production, but they will help control and mask unwanted body odor. Deodorant is most effective on freshly shaven underarms, as hair can trap and exacerbate body odor. Perfume and colognes can help you feel confident throughout the day by making you smell fresh and clean.

Apply Antiperspirants Properly

  • Antiperspirants are not meant to just be applied before rushing out the door. They’re most effective when applied the night before so they can properly be absorbed into the skin for maximum efficiency. As the day goes on, you can reapply as needed. If you’re a heavy sweater, opt for clinical or prescription-strength antiperspirants, which have a higher concentration of aluminum, the active sweat-blocking ingredient.

Re-Apply Sunscreen Frequently

  • Opting for a water-resistant is the first step. According to the FDA, there are two types of water-resistant sunscreens: Water Resistant (40 min) and 'Water Resistant (80 min), which retain their SPF properties for 40 or 80 minutes, respectively, while your body comes into contact with water (swimming or sweating). However, these sunscreens are no match for those who are constantly sweating, so it’s best to re-apply frequently to ensure that you’re protecting your skin from those harmful UV rays.

Use a Facial/Body Mist

  • Spraying your face or body and letting the water evaporate will offer temporary relief, especially on a windy day. You can buy some aerosol facial mist sprays, or just DIY it with some water in a dollar-store spray bottle that can be thrown in your bag or pocket for immediate emergency cooldowns. There are also 2-in-1 fan and mist combos that can be bought almost everywhere in the summer!

Carry a Change of Clothes and a Towel

  • The gym is not the only place you should be bringing a towel and change of clothes if you suffer from excessive sweating. Stick a towel in your bag and dry off when you get the chance. Absorbing some of the sweat before it makes its way onto your clothing can help prevent sweat stains and ease some general discomfort. If you’re taking public transit or headed to work or an important event, bring a change of clothes (or 2!) to put on once you’re at the office. Sweat stains = avoided.

Sweat-Proof Your Makeup Bag

  • Going makeup-free during the summer can be beneficial but is not always possible. Sweat can melt makeup off the face, and can even cause breakouts. If you’re going to wear face makeup (foundations, powders, concealers, etc.) be sure to opt for waterproof ones. Additionally, prep your face with an oil-free mattifying moisturizer. Top it all off with a setting spray to ensure your makeup stays on your face during the hottest and sweatiest of days. Bonus tip: waterproof mascara is your friend, especially for those who sweat from their foreheads a lot.

Get a Bed Fan

  • The only thing worse than heat and humidity during the day is heat and humidity at night when you’re trying to sleep. Being excessively hot during the night cause you to feel restless and unable to fall asleep, leaving you cranky and tired the following day. If AC, ceiling fans, or portable fans are not an option (or just not enough), then bed fans are for you. Yeah, that’s right, a fan that is meant to keep you cool on the hottest of summer nights that blows cool air under your blankets. Say goodbye to night sweats for good.

Shield Your Underarms

  • The sweaty person’s armor comes in the form of sweat-absorbing shields/pads. If you sweat excessively from your underarms, you can get away with putting an absorbent pad underneath them, without having to put on an extra undershirt layer. These won’t diminish sweating but can help absorb the majority of it before the sweat gets to your clothing and leaves a stain.

Invest in a Sweat-Proof Undershirt

  • If your sweating is not just localized in the underarms but also on the chest and back areas, it may be worth to put on the extra layer of absorbent material to prevent the sweat from reaching your clothing and leaving stains. There are specially formulated sweat-proof undershirts for those who need that extra layer of assurance!

Get Some Thigh-Saving Biker Shorts

  • Wearing skirts and beautiful sundresses in the warm weather can lead to moisture and chaffing, particularly in the thigh area. Wearing biking shorts (made of moisture-wicking material) can help prevent painful chafing and help you feel confident all summer long.

Replace Cotton with Moisture-Wicking Materials

  • Cotton is a super-absorbent material, but once it is wet, it doesn’t wick away moisture but rather leaves it sitting on the skin, which can cause irritation and chafing. Moisture-wicking materials are specially formulated to absorb and wick moisture away from the skin, which is guaranteed to make you drier and more comfortable all day long. Best of all, these materials are available in tops, pants, undergarments, and socks. You can be moisture-free from head to toe!

Get Rid of Yellow Underarm Stains

  • Sometimes there’s no avoiding those pesky yellow-tinged sweat stains left behind on light-colored clothing. To get rid of them, mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda with a ¼ cup of water and let sit for a couple of hours before washing. Rinse and repeat (if necessary) until they’re all gone!

Make a DIY Natural Deodorant

  • Well, now that you’ve got baking soda lying around, you may as well put it to use! Make a natural aluminum-free deodorant by mixing ½ a cup of baking soda with a ½ cup of cornstarch. You can also add your favorite essential oil (try lavender or coconut!) for fragrance.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours

  • Peak hours of the sun are generally during midday, so if you’re going to work or workout outside, try to do it in the early morning or late afternoon into the evening. This will decrease your exposure to harmful UV rays and blazing heat, which will help you sweat less.

Make Changes to Your Diet

  • Summer is always a time when people are re-evaluating their diets and making changes to get beach body ready. But did you know that consuming certain foods and drinks can help you sweat less? This includes water-rich fruits & vegetables, and nutrients and vitamins such as fiber and B vitamins. Check out our full list of foods that can help reduce excessive sweating. Alternately, there are also some foods and drinks you should stay away from such as caffeine, alcohol, and highly processed foods. Visit the full list of foods and drinks that can make sweating worse! There’s your motivation to make good changes to your diet!

Go For a Swim

  • If you’re fortunate enough to own a pool or live near a public pool or beach, then take advantage of it! A quick dip in the water can cool you off and lower your body temperature. Best of all, once you get out of the water and start sweating again, everyone will just assume you’re still wet from your previous dip in the water. If you don't have access to any of these, then a cool shower or bath will do!

Reduce Sweat!

  • Of course, we saved the best for last. The three most sweat-prone zones on the human body are the hands, feet, and underarms. Are you wondering if it’s actually possible to sweat less from these areas? Well, we’ve got some good news for you—it is! If you sweat from one or all three of these zones, consider trying Dermadry’s iontophoresis machine. It is an all-natural, drug-free, needle-free and non-invasive way to treat excessive sweating. 15-to-20-minute treatments are done from the comfort of your home and can provide up to 6 weeks of dryness—that’s half of the summertime!
