How to Deal with Excessive Sweating this Fall

While summer is over, for those who suffer from hyperhidrosis, the sweating doesn't stop once the year’s warmest season ends.

Autumn is traditionally associated with sweaters, layers, outerwear, boots, and other things that just the thought of may have hyperhidrosis sufferers in a sweat. While this may conjure up imagery of coziness for the average person, for those living with hyperhidrosis, it is just a sweaty nightmare. Sweating through thick sweaters, being stuck in damp boots all day, and wearing drenched gloves, the colder weather does not offer much relief for the majority of hyperhidrosis sufferers.

The start of a new season is the perfect time for a fresh start. We’ve put together our top tips for dealing with excessive sweating during the fall to help you feel your best all season long.

How to Deal with Excessive Sweating in the Fall

Use Layers to Your Advantage

The end of summer may be exciting, and you may want to start putting your fall wardrobe to use as soon as the temperature drops, but instead of just putting one thick layer on, such as a fluffy sweater, jacket, or coat, try layering instead. This will help you to keep cool as the temperature changes throughout the day. Especially at the beginning of a new season, the weather can be unpredictable and wearing multiple layers will allow you to remove layers according to the temperature. While a jacket may seem like a good idea outdoors, once you use public transit or enter a building it may get too warm and you may sweat through your underlayer, causing those dreaded sweat stains! We recommend a sweat-proof or moisture-wicking undershirt, and then 1-3 additional layers (e.g. a blouse, vest, and cardigan, or a t-shirt, cardigan, and jacket). You can then add or remove layers according to how you feel in relation to your environment and prevent sweat stains (or conceal them)!

You can also use layers to your advantage to hide sweat stains. A cardigan or jumper over a t-shirt or blouse may help you feel more comfortable and confident throughout the day, and keep you from constantly checking your underarms for sweat stains, as thick materials will more easily

Embrace Sweater Weather

Oversized or loose-fitting sweaters and jumpers are a key fall wardrobe staple, and a favourite among hyperhidrosis sufferers. Wear an undershirt or t-shirt underneath your sweater to help absorb the sweat before it reaches your sweater. An oversized fit that falls far from the body will help keep you warm, but also help air circulate, and prevent sweat from reaching your sweater, so no unwanted sweat stains! Adopt darker colours for more protection against pit stains!

Pick Dark Autumn Colours

Use the autumn colour palette to your advantage! Some popular colours to wear in the fall include rich, dark tones of brown, grey red, auburn, burgundy, purple, and black. While summer’s crisp and pastel colour palette may be unforgiving to those suffering with excessive sweating, autumn colours are perfect for concealing sweat stains! Popular fall patterns also include check, tweed, houndstooth, plaid, and tartan, which can equally help someone hide those unwanted armpit sweat stains due to their distracting pattern that detract from any sweat that may be accumulating on your garment.

Wear Moisture-Wicking Undergarments

Avoid cotton if you can, and swap it out for materials that will help wick moisture away. Absorbent materials and textiles like cotton will absorb your sweat but it will not dry quickly,, which can be uncomfortable, and even dangerous if you’re out in the cold too long. Look for specially formulated moisture-wicking garments to use as the layer closest to your skin, as this will help keep sweat away from your body and wick it away, rather than absorb it and leave it resting against your skin.

Cool It with the Caffeine

The season of pumpkin spice lattes, spicy chai, and other warm and flavourful caffeine-rich drinks can come at a cost to those who suffer from excessive sweating. Of course, if you suffer from hyperhidrosis, you may be sweating regardless of what you’re drinking, but did you know that caffeine is one of the greatest triggers for sweating? While excessive sweating shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the drinks you love, maybe opt for some cooler and caffeine-free drinks before any important events or meetings! Cold drinks will also help you cool down if you’re feeling a bit too warm.

Spice Up Your Fall Wardrobe

Use fall outdoor accessories to help you feel more confident! Hats, gloves, and scarves can all help to conceal excessive sweating, and make you more comfortable throughout the day. A well positioned scarf can help conceal underarm sweat stains while adding a boost of colour to your outfit. Gloves can help keep sweaty hands at bay, and hats can help conceal a particularly bad sweaty hair day. Accessorizing with seasonal pieces can help vamp up your wardrobe and give you a confidence boost if you’re dealing with excessive sweating.

Stay Dry From Head to Toe

Hats can help conceal craniofacial sweating (sweating of the face and head), but they can also exacerbate it. Heat is released through your head, and trapped moisture is a no-go, especially in the colder autumn months. If you can skip the hat in favour of earmuffs or the hood of a jacket or coat, then you’re best doing so, to favour air circulation and prevent trapped moisture and discomfort.

The same goes for boots. If you live in a climate where you can skip heavy-duty constrictive boots, then opt for a lighter pair that won’t make you feel confined and moist throughout the day. However, if boots are a necessity, then be sure to wear moisture-wicking socks in order to allow the sweat from your feet to not remain on your skin all day. We also recommend bringing a change or two of socks and a change of shoes to wear once you’re indoors. The goal is to keep moisture away from your skin and swap socks and footwear when possible to avoid sweat and dampness from remaining on your feet too long, which can lead to softened skin and medical conditions such as ingrown toenails and athlete’s foot.

Treat Excessive Sweating

If you’re looking to reduce sweating and keep your cool this fall, in both senses of the word, then it’s time to get your excessive sweating under control. Excessive sweating is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. Those with this condition can sweat, on average, 4-5 times more than the average person, and in excess of what is needed for thermoregulation (body temperature regulation, i.e. sweat’s primary function).

Antiperspirants are the first-line treatment for excessive sweating, but many other options exist. Chances are, if you’re a heavy sweater, then you’ve probably already tried countless deodorants and antiperspirants, and you found yourself sweating through your shirts within the hour. If you’ve found yourself nodding to this and feeling overwhelmed and frustrated in the deodorant aisle of your local drugstore or pharmacy, then it may be time to try an alternative treatment!

Iontophoresis is the best choice for those seeking non-invasive, needle-free, and drug-free treatment that can provide lasting results. It is an all-natural treatment option that provides long-lasting dryness—up to 6 weeks at a time (that’s half a season!). Iontophoresis treatment is becoming increasingly popular thanks to at-home devices such as Dermadry making it easier than ever before to treat excessive sweating from the comfort and privacy of your home. Dermadry offers an all-in-one FDA cleared and CE marked solution to treat excessive sweating of the hands, feet, and underarms, the three zones most commonly affected by the condition. That means you’ll be able to wear your cozy sweaters, gloves, and boots, without the fear of sweating right through them.
