How To Stay Dry This Summer

By Sam Nardi 2021 May 10th

While those who have  hyperhidrosis sweat all year round, it can be even worse in hot and humid climates. As summer is fast-approaching for many of us, this is the most dreaded time of year for those who suffer from hyperhidrosis.

Sweating is a normal and crucial response to a rise in your body temperature. Hyperhidrosis, which is a condition that causes excessive sweating, can be exacerbated by hot and humid weather. This can lead to drenched clothing and footwear, sweat stains, body odour, and other unpleasant and undesirable side-effects. Hyperhidrosis can seem unmanageable, especially in the summer, but its symptoms can be managed and alleviated by treating the condition and employing tips to help you feeling fresh, clean, and dry all day long.

Here are some of our best tips for excessive sweaters who are dreading the upcoming season and weather.

Apply Antiperspirant Properly

Did you know that in order for traditional antiperspirants to work best, they need to be applied to clean, dry, and shaven (preferably) skin? They also need to be applied at night so that the aluminum (the active ingredient in antiperspirant that keeps you dry) has time to penetrate the skin and create “plugs”, which will keep you dry for several hours. Some antiperspirants are formulated for 24h, 48h and sometimes up to 7-day wear! Although, for those who sweat excessively, they may not last nearly as long. Be sure to always read the label to ensure you are applying it properly to get the most out of your antiperspirants. Keep in mind that antiperspirants may not be effective for those who sweat excessively, and in that case you may want to seek stronger prescription antiperspirants or try other treatments like  iontophoresis.

Deo On The Go

While deodorant does not have any properties or active ingredients that will reduce sweating (unlike antiperspirants), they are made to keep you smelling fresh and clean! If you sweat excessively, the moistness of your skin in your underarms becomes the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Look out for ingredients in deodorants that could help neutralize both odours and bacteria. Pick an unscented deodorant to simply neutralize body odour, or pick a scented deodorant if you want that extra layer of “protection” in the form of an added scent that can help mask unwanted odors. Be sure to reapply throughout the day and pick a deodorant format that works for you, as you can get them in solid, cream, and power formats. Deodorant wipes may be the best for those who are on-the-go!

Stay Cool, Calm, & Hydrated

Of course, if you can avoid the sun and heat in favour of an air-conditioned shaded room, we strongly suggest you do so, but for many of us this isn’t possible. If you’re on the go and know you’ll be in the heat, sun, and humidity for part of or most of the day, be sure to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade/indoors to cool yourself down, and bring along a towel, change of clothes or any “extras” that can help you feel your best all day long.

Swap Out The Caffeine & Other Fiends

Caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and highly processed foods are all known triggers for sweating. Swap these out in favour of cool and refreshing foods and beverages that will help keep you cool. If body odor (bromhidrosis) is a concern of yours, then you should opt to eliminate odor-causing substances such as garlic, onion, and meat, which can cause body odor that may be exacerbated by excessive sweating and the heat and humidity.

Sweat-Proof Your Style

For all-day comfort (and to conceal underarm sweat stains!) plan your wardrobe ahead of time. Wear loose-fitting, thin clothing made of light and natural fibers, such as cotton or silk, to improve air circulation and keep you cool. We also suggest moisture-wicking materials and athletic wear designed to keep sweat off your body and facilitate the evaporation process.

Shield Your Skin

Wearing sunscreen as an excessive sweater can be challenging, but just as crucial. Be sure to lookout for water-resistant sunscreens that are often labelled “active” sunscreens that are meant for those who partake in physical activities and swimming. Water (whether the ocean, pool, or your sweat) will wear sunscreen away faster, so be sure to reapply according to the instructions and keep it with you for easy re-application.

Treat Sweating at Home

The best way to head into a sweat-free summer is to treat your hyperhidrosis.  Dermadry’s iontophoresis device is the solution for those wanting to get their sweating under control from the comfort of their home. The FDA cleared device treats excessive sweating of the hands, feet, and underarms. Learn more about iontophoresis treatment here!

How To Stay Dry in Hot & Humid Weather

Are you wondering how Dermadry will hold up in hot and humid temperatures? Regina, who suffers from axillary hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating) put Dermadry to the ultimate test by using it throughout her travels across Japan. Watch and read about her experience to know how well Dermadry held up during her busiest activity-filled days where she was hiking and exploring in extreme heat and humidity.

This is Regina from WhereSheMayGo.com I'm just here to do a quick unboxing video of this new Dermadry system that I received in the mail today. I'm here today on Tsunoshima Island. We've been riding our bikes all day, sweating. I just wanted to give the product a first glance and do an unboxing with you guys.

So it comes in this wonderful kit, and it has some safety instructions and a manual. The Dermadry system uses this simple tap water through iontophoresis to help get rid of sweating in your armpit areas and your hands and feet. It comes with these two nodules, which you connect. You dip these in tap water, and then you put the nodules in there and connected to the machine and put them under your arms for 15 minutes. And it sends little pulses that help, over time, get rid of the excess sweating.

I sweat a lot in my armpits. It's actually something that I'm not very proud of. It's something I'm self-conscious about because it makes it hard to be comfortable, especially in humid Japan. You can see I'm like soaking right now, but I always wear cotton t-shirts because I just don't want to be somebody with wet sweat stains all over me. So I'm hoping that this product will help alleviate some of those symptoms.

I can't wait to share it with you guys, so stay tuned to see the results of the Dermadry system.

Hey guys, it's Regina. I'm at the top of Mount Misen in Miyajima, Japan. I just climbed for about 30 minutes and I'm not sweaty at all. And before I got here, I actually used the Dermadry system on the train just to see how it would fare out so that I can see how it keeps up with all of the activities I'm going to do around the Island.

So far I'm not sweaty and I'm not funky. Usually under all of these layers, especially the sweater, I'd be super sweaty, but so far my armpits are good. So, we're going to go around the Island throughout the day and see how Dermadry keeps up.

Dermadry was able to keep me happy and dry while I hiked Mount Misen, explored Daisho-in temple, wandered Omotesando street, and enjoyed Itsukushima shrine. I used the product once a week, sometimes using it inconsistently, but I've had great results nonetheless. I will continue to use Dermadry as needed. I highly encouraged Dermadry for all of your adventures.
