Iontophoresis Treatment: Do's and Don'ts

Dermadry Team

If you’re new to Dermadry iontophoresis treatment, then you may not know where to begin, or you may have some questions regarding what you should and should not do during iontophoresis treatment! We’ve outlined some key do’s and don’ts of iontophoresis treatment to get you started. Once you get into the hang of it, you’ll be an iontophoresis pro in no time!

Do’s

  • Do read the 'Instructions for Use' manual that is included with your device. This ensures that you get all the information you need to perform the treatment properly and efficiently!
  • Do create a treatment schedule that fits your needs and lifestyle. We recommend doing 5 treatments a week during the initial phase, at the highest level that is comfortable for you. Once you've achieved your desired dryness, a maintenance schedule must be upkept to ensure you stay dry, so be sure to work out what works best for you, in accordance with the guidelines set forth in our Instructions for Use manual!
  • Do read our iontophoresis page for additional information on the science and effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Do determine your hyperhidrosis level. Based on how much you sweat, determine your hyperhidrosis level in the treatment area to best understand how often you should perform treatments. Constant moistness signifies mild hyperhidrosis, if beads of sweat appear on the skin, this signifies moderate hyperhidrosis, and if sweat is constantly dripping, this signifies severe hyperhidrosis. • Do watch our YouTube tutorials to see how to quickly and properly set up our device and start a treatment. We have demos for hands, feet, and underarms on the Dermadry YouTube channel to help guide you through your first treatment. Dermadry’s device is very easy to set up and use, so you’ll likely only have to watch the tutorial once before you get the hang of it!
  • Do put on an episode of your favorite TV show or podcast during a treatment. Our treatment sessions last between 15 minutes (underarms) to 20 minutes (hands & feet) so the treatment will be over before the end of it.
  • Do make treatment sessions a part of your "me time" or self-care routine. Depending on the zone you are treating, you can take the time to read a book, pamper yourself or just sit back and relax.
  • Do write in your treatment sessions in your official calendar (whether it's a calendar you keep for work, school, or otherwise). This will ensure that it's a priority and becomes a part of your routine!
  • Do put a reminder on your phone to do the treatment sessions so you never miss one.
  • Do make it a part of your morning or evening routine. This will ensure that you stay on track and make a habit out of it!
  • Do thoroughly clean your skin before starting a treatment. Remove any creams, powders, perfumes, cosmetics, deodorants and antiperspirants from the treatment area. Dermadry should only be used on clean, intact skin.
  • Do use tap water and ensure the towels and/or pockets are adequately soaked. If doing a hand or foot treatment, fill each tray with a maximum of 500 ml of tap water. If doing an underarm treatment, make sure the underarm pads are fully soaked in water.
  • Ensure the hand & foot electrodes are placed the correct way prior to commencing treatment. The side connected to the electrodes should be opposite (parallel) the side where you put your hands and feet in. Make sure your skin does not come in direct contact with the electrodes.
  • Do contact Dermadry’s customer support team if you have any questions. We’re here to help you along your entire treatment journey! You can reach us by webchat, phone, or email!
  • Do consult our website for additional information and resources on sweat, hyperhidrosis, iontophoresis, and more. You will find a wealth of information on sweat-related topics, and guidance to help you navigate the world of hyperhidrosis and iontophoresis.
  • Do place the device on a firm and stable surface when doing hands and feet treatment. For underarm treatment, ensure the pocket-covered electrodes are properly placed under the arm to facilitate proper and even treatment.
  • Moisturize the treatment area if it has become too dry. “Too dry” may seem like a distant reality for hyperhidrosis sufferers, but if you notice your hands are getting dry, moisturize them to prevent any cracks in the skin, which could lead you to have to put a pause on your iontophoresis treatments!
  • Do finish the initial phase and then move onto the maintenance phase. Find a maintenance schedule that works for you and allows you to keep up with your desired level of dryness.
  • Do join our official Dermadry Hyperhidrosis Community on Facebook to share and discuss with other hyperhidrosis sufferers and Dermadry users.
  • Do subscribe to our newsletter to have exclusive insider access to new blogs, contests, updates, and more!

Don’ts

  • Don’t begin iontophoresis treatment until you’ve read our contraindications. Iontophoresis treatment is suitable for most, but always make sure it’s suitable for you prior to commencing treatment.
  • Don’t get discouraged! It is normal to see an increase in sweating after the first couple of treatments, this will subside and a dryer you will reveal itself in no time.
  • Don’t quit your maintenance treatments. Some require a weekly maintenance treatment, while some only require a monthly treatment, it varies from person to person. However, we encourage you not to stop maintenance treatments, as to maintain your desired results!
  • Don’t wear any jewelry during treatment. Be sure to remove all jewelry in the treatment path before commencing treatment.
  • Don’t add anything to the water. Dermadry’s device is designed for tap water use only. If the water in your area is too “soft” (lacking minerals) please contact our customer support team for additional guidance.
  • Don’t start at the highest current level. Work your way up and see what level is most comfortable for you. Some are comfortable at the highest level straight away, while some have to work their way up. We always suggest you use the level you are most comfortable at. While the higher the current level, the faster you’ll see results, we always encourage you to stay within your comfort range.
  • Don’t use iontophoresis if you suspect you may have a case of athlete’s foot. The infection must be cleared before commencing iontophoresis treatment, as it will not work on skin that is affected by a fungal infection.
  • Don’t allow direct contact between skin and electrodes when in use. Ensure electrodes are covered by the provided towels (hands and feet) and pockets (underarms) during treatment. Direct contact between skin and electrodes may cause burns, redness or irritation.
  • Don’t use more than 500ml (17 fl. oz.) of tap water in each tray for treatment of hands or feet.
  • Don’t use iontophoresis on broken skin. If you have any cuts on the treatment area, be sure to cover them with some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to insulate them and prevent discomfort during treatment.
  • Don't hesitate to contact our support team for tailored advice if you are struggling. We're here to help you and guide you on your journey to becoming sweat-free!
