My Hyperhidrosis Story: Rebecca's Experience

By Sam Nardi 2020 Jul 21st

We reached out to some members of the Dermadry community and asked them about their hyperhidrosis story and their Dermadry journey. Below is Rebecca's hyperhidrosis story!

Meet Rebecca!

Rebecca is a student who recently purchased Dermadry. Thanks to Dermadry she has been able to feel confident pursuing her studies in the medical field. Read on to hear how hyperhidrosis previously affected her life, from pursuing martial arts courses to her career path!

How has hyperhidrosis affected your life?

I’ve had hyperhidrosis since I was 13 years old, which is when I realized that I had really sweaty hands and underarms.

My first introduction to hyperhidrosis was when I started doing martial arts. My hands were always so sweaty that it made it even more difficult, as, among other things, I had trouble grabbing people’s hands and doing the proper moves. Also, while no one could really see my sweaty underarms in my gear, I could feel them, which was really annoying.

What is your hyperhidrosis profile (what zones do you sweat from and what is your level: mild, moderate or severe)? Also, would you mind sharing your treatment schedule with us?

I have moderate to severe hyperhidrosis in my hands, which was really the area that was bothering me the most.

I’m new to Dermadry, and once I got my machine I started doing nearly daily treatments for 2 weeks. Now I’m working on finding a maintenance schedule that works for me and keeps me dry!

How did you first hear of iontophoresis as a treatment option for excessive sweating? Were you skeptical to try it out?

Since I’m currently a student in the medical field, I understood the science behind it and it didn’t freak me out or anything. It did take some getting used to the feeling of current going through my hands, but I just gradually upped the current as I went on with my treatments

Up until I heard about iontophoresis, I was using powder to try and keep my hands dry, but it was very inconvenient as it’s not super effective and you can’t always have powder with you, especially in a medical setting as some patients can be allergic or have asthma.

I discovered iontophoresis and Dermadry through multiple Google searches. I was searching for things like “nurses with sweaty hands” and “doctors with hyperhidrosis” and I came across a report from someone who was studying to become a physician who literally almost quit his studies because of his sweaty hands, I couldn’t believe it. He mentioned how iontophoresis helped him, but the machine he was using was thousands of dollars, so I did my research. I googled “iontophoresis” and came across a lot of information, including videos on YouTube, and so I decided to try Dermadry as it was much more affordable than the other machines I saw online. I reached out to you for more information and started my treatments as soon as I got my device.

In your review, you mentioned that you were a student. What are some school-related struggles you faced because of excessive sweating?

So many! When I went to college for the first time, I experienced a lot of sweat-related struggles. My fingers would constantly slide down my pencils, I would sweat on my papers, which would muck up my handwriting, and I would always leave wet prints behind on papers, which was really embarrassing when I had to hand in papers to my teachers. It also affected my dating life, as I couldn’t really hold hands with my sweetheart.

In school, it’s really hard to network and meet fellow students and professors, because the first thing people do once you meet them for the first time is to reach out their hand for a handshake. I used to have to constantly wipe my hands on my pants before going in for a handshake, but even then my hands still felt cold and clammy. I could read people’s body language and the look on their face was slightly disgusted when they felt my clammy hands.

I’ve recently gone back to school in the medical field as a medical assistant, and that brought up a whole new set of challenges. Having sweaty hands in this field is a huge drawback as you constantly have to put latex gloves on and work hands-on with patients. As someone with sweaty hands, it’s a huge barrier, as you can imagine the sticky, moist nightmare that it is to be wearing latex gloves on while your hands won’t stop sweating. Changing your gloves 20x a day with sweaty hands is a nightmare, while everyone else can get them on in 5 seconds, I would struggle for a minute trying to get them on.

One time in class, our professor asked everyone to take their gloves off to feel each other’s pulses and the person who did mine just exclaimed: “Rebecca, what’s wrong with your hands?!” when she saw how sweaty my hands were.

How has Dermadry changed your life?

I’ve just started using Dermadry this month and it’s given me the ability to focus more on my studies and work rather than being preoccupied with my sweaty hands!
